Coaching

What is Coaching?

Coaching is simply doing what athletic coaches do, but is focused upon those in ministry. An athletic coach helps his players and teams to achieve success by calling forth from within them the latent talents & abilities to win. When necessary, an athletic coach will require his players to practice, work hard, or develop new skills for the task at hand.

In the same way, a Life & Ministry Coach helps his “players” to learn, discover, and develop the skills necessary for ministry success. A Ministry Coach is not an instructor, counselor, consultant, expert or a problem solver. S/he is a sounding board, a facilitator, an awareness raiser.

What I really appreciate about Dr. Bill´s mentoring is the increase I´ve seen in discipline. Having someone to check up on me every month has kept me accountable to becoming a more disciplined man in all areas of my life. I´ve also seen relatively major gains in terms of prayer and growing closer to my spouse. This was something I wanted to work on and Dr. Bill helped me clarify what it is I wanted and helped me practically achieve my goals. If it hadn´t been for Dr. Bill as my coach, I doubt I would have accomplished 1/3 of everything I planned on getting done over the past six months. I´m the type of person who needs structure and accountability to get things done. Dr. Bill has provided that way beyond what I initially expected. I am very satisfied with the services he’s provided.

The Life & Ministry Coach helps you to learn, discover, and develop skills by helping you to realize the next step you need to take. Here is how Bob Logan describes coaching: “Coaching is the process of coming alongside a person or team to help them discover God´s agenda for their life and ministry, and then cooperating with the Holy Spirit to see that agenda become a reality.” (Coaching 101 Handbook, p.3)

What are some situations in which coaching is beneficial?

Any of the following will yield better results through coaching, rather than by top-down management:

  • Motivating Staff
  • Appraisals & Assessments
  • Delegating
  • Task Performance
  • Sermon Prep
  • Planning & Review
  • Relationship Issues
  • Staff Development
  • Team Building
  • Team Working
  • Life Mission & Focus
  • Personal Life Issues & Self-Discipline

Coaching will help you to take the next step towards success in your life & ministry. The approach is very individualized to your needs and desires. We help you to set your goals, develop your plans, choose your options, and execute your actions towards success.

“Loving the Lord with all your strength means not only knowing what your strengths are but also having the clarity and focus to use those strengths in the context of your calling – constantly, consistently, even when the world is changing around you.”– Jane Creswell, Christ-Centered Coaching

Here are some personal Mission Statements that people have developed using the “Life Goals” guide from HighPower Resources:

Actual Mission Statements developed by people being coached by Dr. Bill:

  • “To use my God-given creativity and teaching to bring others to Christ” (church leader)
  • Or, from a young mom, “To teach God´s truths for practical use in everyday life.”
  • A church staff person: “To train, equip, inspire and mobilize God´s people so that we can work together to serve Jesus in amazing ways.”
  • From an empty-nester: “To maximize my life for God by concentrating on spiritual growth, self-improvement and goal-setting.”
  • From a single mom: “My life mission is to forever follow the Lord´s will for my life. I will not settle for less than what the Lord wants for me or my children.”

What is significant about these statements?

Because these people are PLANNING TO LIVE INTENTIONALLY. They know where they want to go because they have defined the big picture.

YOU could do that to.

“Thanks for all of the information and helps for our small churches.” Pastor Tommy Nichols Beulah Presbyterian Church Mechanicsville, VA
